TOP TEN NAIJA TASTY STREET FOOD | ADEOLA’S GUIDE.

DEAR ESTEEMED READER WELCOME TO THE BLUSHWITHADEOLA BLOG. IT'S A GOOD DAY TO #ENDBADGOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA AND TRUST GOD.

At the end of this blog there is a poll that allows you to choose the type of content you want for my birthday please do well to vote.

so today we are talking about food!!

You will agree with me that food in Nigeria has an unbeatable unique flavor and taste that will always keep you coming for more.

Nigerian street foods on the other hand is on another level, even though there are so many restaurants trying to impress us with all their luxury food(which i really enjoy), but at night i still find myself eating Suya and yaji from an old newspaper. Street food has continued to show it’s strength as it allows you to be a part of another culture without physically being there, some of us have learnt a little bit of Hausa just to scope the mai suya, lol.

Making this list was really difficult for me because Nigeria is a country with diverse languages with street food popularity differences so I had to consider culinary skill, popularity, ease of consumption and price before writing this at least everyone residing in Nigeria has had at least one of the listed foods.

We will be making our list from tenth to first read till the end to know if your favorite made the list.

10. BESKE/AWARA: Beske popularly known as Awara in the northern part of Nigeria, is a very popular Nigerian street food made from cheese or soy curds. It is fried and then eaten after mixed in pepper sauce or with yagi (this is top secret but i’ll be telling you later). Mostly hawked in plastic containers or sometimes easily seen by the street. Beske alata with cold pure water/drink on a sunny afternoon after lectures is really a thing for me, If you are a student in my school you will easily relate with this.  Don’t be surprised how filled your stomach can get with not more than ₦100. Wahala for who no like beske oo

9. Okpa: Okpa is Moi Moi that went to YALE this precious delicacy made from grinded Bambara nut is a gift to Nigerians from the eastern part of the country. Original Enugu Okpa and pepper early in the morning is an entire cruise.

8. Roasted corn and coconut: Sellers of roasted corn sit on lower stool with their metal basin filled with hot charcoal and freshly peeled corn sitting right on the basin of charcoal, it is typically possible to see the same seller selling boiled corn too.  The best roasted corn are not dark or with burnt patches, I am telling you this now so you won’t say I told you try something that will hurt your taste buds oo.

Pro tip: BUY SOFT ROASTED CORN AND WELL COOKED BOILED CORN.

7. PUFF PUFF: This is fluffy, spongy and delicious fried dough of goodness. Very affordable and eaten mostly from an old newspaper.

Pro tip: Enjoy puff puff with Fanta please.

6. GALA AND LACASERA: Gala is a particular brand of sausage roll and lacasera is an apple drink, although you can have Bigi or meaty but just call it gala. This is actually just any type of street food; it is a proper traffic food. Anywhere there is traffic jam there is Gala and Lacasera.

Pro tip: REMEMBER YOU ARE IN A TRAFFIC JAM, SO ASK IF HE/SHE HAS CHANGE FIRST.

Sources has it that gala and lacasera has led to more races than usual in Nigeria

5. Maishai: Shai is actually tea and when put together with mai it means (tea seller). But well maishai do more than just boil water for tea and pepare bread and egg. They also sell the best Fried noodles and egg. You know what’s amazing about them? They are always by their  stand early in the morning and late at nights too. So you see breakfast and dinner is just at your junction. Bread for breakfast and indomiiiin for dinner voila… Pro tip:  You can place the fried noodles in the bread and make an Indomiiin sandwitch

4. BOLI AND EPA/ PEPPER SAUCE: This is roasted Plantain and groundnut(Epa) or pepper sauce. As a Nigerian I have tasted and see what Boli can actually do  for you especially if you have a bottle of coke to help step it down. Guys this is a proper lunch.

3. FRIED YAM/POTATO/PLANTAIN: Fried yam, potato and plantain is what it is the sauce is the main factor here, it catapults it to anywhere it needs to be. I find fried yams very addictive amongst all three.

Pro tip: Make sure you have enough Water with you. I mean WATER not even drinks now if you are eating fried yam or potatoes.

2. SUYA: Do you like grilled chicken, meat or fish? Then undoubtedly you will like suya. Originally from the northern part of nigeria, this finger licking delicacy of skewered meat. It sold at early evenings/nights by the road side on open grills by the mai suya (suya seller) and wrapped in old newspapers. Sometimes I am tempted to think the newspaper is a must in the recipe. First ask for suya and Yaji Tomatoes, onions and cucumber will be added

Pro tip: The unique yaji is made up of Red Pepper+ground peanuts+salt+ginger+seasoning cubes.

Pro tip: Don’t forget to ask for extra yaji and onions, the spicier the better.

  1. Akara: Akara popularly known as kosai in the northern part of NIgeria is the king of all street foods, it can be eaten as breakfast, lunch and dinner. I could have added it to the number three but it really stands out. It is Nigerian fried beans cake, it can be eaten with bread, Ogi, Eko, fried yam or potatoes or even alone.

Pro tip: Take Akara with ogi for a better Saturday morning breakfast experience.

Comment street food you think ought to make the list but didn’t, like so as to encourage us and share with friends to enjoy too.

I tasted Wara for the first time during my nysc and I loved it, that’s a good recommendation.
Finally, I think you’ll like Port Harcourt Bole if you try it. There’s is prepared with fish and spiced with salad and utazi leaf. It slaps.
