Every year in the world, thousands of people die or are seriously injured in incidents. Many deaths could be prevented if first aid is given before emergency services arrive.
When it comes to first aid, a victim’s situation can be saved or worsened in a few minutes depending on the intervention done within that critical time.
The things you should do before rendering first aid are:
Below are some common accidents and the aid we can give before the medic personnel or ambulance arrives.
- Choking
Press hard into the abdomen with a quick, upward thrust — as if you are trying to lift the person up..
Give 5 abdominal thrusts.
Give 5 back blows.
Alternate between 5 thrusts and 5 blows until the blockage is dislodged.

2. BURNS AND SCALDS
Scalds are caused by moist heat while burns are caused by dry heat.
For minor burns /scales the first thing you should do is hold the burned area under cool running water(NOT COLD) or put a wet cloth on the area until the pain eases. Remove rings or any tight item from the burned area, do this quickly and gently before the area swells. DO NOT BREAK THE BLISTER OR APPLY LOTION OF ANY KIND.

3. CUTS
Cuts are mainly caused by mishandling sharp objects.
In case of wounds follow the steps below:
Rinse the cut and remove visible object from the wound
Apply pressure on the cut with a sterile gauze Bandage or clean cloth
Elevate the injured body part to reduce blood loss
When bleeding stop cover the wound with a new bandage
- Seizure/convulsion:
In case of seizures:
Give the person space/room
Loosen the clothing around the person’s neck(tie, jewellery etc)
Roll the person to the side to keep airways open
DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN THE PERSON’S MOUTH.(It is a myth that the person might swallow his/her tongue)
DO NOT RESTRAIN THE PERSON
5. POISONING: A frightened parent arrives with a child who swallowed a cleaning liquid. Or perhaps the harmful substance is a medicine. Or it might be a product meant to kill insects. These are common causes of accidental poisoning.
In cases like this, seek medical help as soon as possible. Save the container of whatever caused the poisoning. And look on the container for information about anything that stops the effects of the poison.
Save anything expelled from the mouth of the victim. That way, doctors can examine it.
In the past, some people forced poisoning victims to empty the stomach(usually vomiting). But this is because some poisons can cause additional damage when they come back up the throat.
6. FAINTING:
Position the person on his or her back.
If there are no injuries and the person is breathing, raise the person’s legs above heart level — about 12 inches (30 centimeters) — if possible. Loosen belts, collars or other constrictive clothing. To reduce the chance of fainting again, don’t get the person up too quickly.
7. MUSCLE PULL/COMPRESSION: This is caused by overstretching the muscle. So in case you or anyone around experiences it DO NOT HIT THE PART rather remember RICE
R– Rest the part until it less painful
I– place Ice on the part
C– use an elastic Compressor to support the part
E– Elevate/ raise the injured part above heart level to reduce swelling

8. DISLOCATION
Leave the joint alone. Attempting to move or jam a dislocated bone back in can damage blood vessels, muscles, ligaments, and nerves. Put an ice pack covered in a cloth on the area around the joint. Ice can ease swelling and pain in and around the joint.
9. DIFFICULTLY IN BREATHING
Loosen any tight clothing. Help the person use any prescribed medicine (such as an asthma inhaler or home oxygen). Continue to monitor the person’s breathing and pulse until medical help arrives. DO NOT assume that the person’s condition is improving if you can no longer hear abnormal breath sounds, such as wheezing.
10. STINGS:
Insect stings seldom cause grave consequences. However, they can cause severe pain, especially if it is on the lips or the mouth.
- If it is a bee, wasp or hornet sting, remove the sting with a pair of tweezers. If tweezers aren’t available, apply pressure around the sting to force it out.
- Wash thoroughly with soap and water, and apply an antihistamine ointment or lotion to relieve itching.
- Avoid scratching the bites.

These are the 10 common incidents and accidents and the first aid that can be rendered. You can save a life and your life can be saved by sharing with everyone around you.
